Six students who undertook the “Get into Construction” programme at Building Futures East came together to celebrate their success last Friday 23rd March, during which the students were given the opportunity to present the story about their 4-week journey to a number of invited guests. Chi Onwurah, Labour MP for Newcastle Central, attended the event and was keen to speak to the students and hear all about their experiences.
The “Get into Construction” programme consisted of 2 weeks training at Building Futures East combined with a 2-week work placement with Balfour Beatty, during which the learners successfully completed a CSCS test and an Abrasive Wheels course as well as gaining a number of hand skills in plastering, joinery and bricklaying. Students were also placed with subcontractors such as Fastrack, H Malone, Veale-Nixon, Phoenix Flooring and CJS Joinery supporting them to gain valuable work experience in the construction industry.
Amongst the success stories we would like to congratulate Christopher Laws who has been offered employment for 3 months with H Malone Electricals of Gosforth as well as Catherine Ingoe who has had her placement extended for a further 2 weeks with Fastrack. In addition, a number of the students have progressed onto further training with Building Futures East on a variety of programmes and we look forward to continuing to support them on their journey into employment.
