Building Futures East recently gained a contract to deliver the Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities fund (NLDC) to learners aged 19+ from the Newcastle area. The course attracted large interest mainly because of the opportunities this brought with completion:
- The opportunity to practice/learn/hone construction skills
- Progression and entry onto an accredited NCFE Level 1 Occupational Studies course which teaches the basics in brickwork and plastering as well as teamwork, problem solving, and Health and Safety.
- The opportunity to sit a free CSCS test upon completion of the course.
During this time learners were able to practice a number of constructing skills, such as; Constructing gable ends using half bond stretchers walling, boarding and plastering both walls and ceilings, all while revising for the CSCS tests using resources provided by BFE. The students were in attendance for 3 days a week over a 2 week period. All students completed 100% attendance and were put forward for their CSCS test at Collingwood House where all achieved the pass mark 1st time! Out of the 7 that attended, 5 have returned to progress onto fully accredited courses at BFE, whilst the remaining 2 have successfully found employment back within their industry.
If you are 19+, currently in receipt of benefits, and live in the Newcastle area, you could be eligible for the Check Out construction course. Ring 01912632752 for more information.
